A Traditional Shaving Guide and Subscription Review

There’s something very refreshing about a traditional shave, the feel of the hot towel and then the cold steel against your neck. It’s exhilarating but also frightening. Shaving’s a weekly ritual for me that includes a number of shorter lengths throughout the week thanks to my electric trimmer but there’s always a need for a shave that’s closer than you’d like. So when I was asked if I’d like to review a shaving subscription service I thought that’s exactly the type of thing that I’d subscribe too. They’ve taken the original model of the close shave and coupled it with the in thing at the moment, a subscription service. I can only speak for myself, but in my day to day life I don’t have time to buy specialist anymore. It’s either a commercial product from Amazon or I’m sneaking around the shelves in Tesco like a lost and tired puppy at 10pm. So there’s two elements to this, the kit’s performance and the subscription service.

So how did it go:

It’s been a while since I’ve shaved myself with a proper razor so I’ll break it down so you can see how good the kit was. Having a long beard at the moment due to all the training and not having lots of meetings, means that I’ve been growing it out and it’s probably not going to be the easiest to shave off. So I used my trimmer to shave it down to an acceptable level, then using a Nivea face exfoliator gave myself a wash with hot water to open up the pores. I find scrubbing up properly before hand means I can get a cleaner shave with little burn or chance of rashes. In the box you get a Personal Barber Double Edged Safety Razor and two types of blades. There’s also a PB Synthetic Hair Shaving Brush and Phoenix and Beau Albion Shaving Soap. The soap smells just like the one my granddad would use over 25 years ago and it brought back a nostalgic smile to my face. Having a good lather is essential and you want to get right in there. I personally find a long confident stroke with the blade is key to a good shave. Make sure you’ve got a fresh blade in every time and rotate as required as there’s 4 edges 🙂 As I said before it’s been a while since I shaved myself with steel and I nicked myself just below my ear! Ouch. It wouldn’t be a good close shave if I didn’t though right. A bit of toilet paper in a square, another nostalgic moment. As you can see I get a great finish with the shaving gear! There’s also a cooling effect shaving balm from Skin Stuff 4 Blokes. With the awesome blades they’ve even included a Rockwell Razors Blade Safe to put used blades in. Really useful when you’ve got young children and little hands around everywhere. Overall, the equipment covers everything and if you’re not as confident there’s a how to guide to guide you through the process.

The Subscription Service

This is my first box so I can only really tell you about what to expect and what I received. It was neatly packaged in a box big enough to go through the letterbox. No more missed parcels and queuing up at the post office or knocking on the neighbours at 8pm when I get back home from work. Good thinking. By providing you with a Personal Barber Razor and Brush there’s no need to keep sending. So the images above are of the first months. Looking at other reviews there’s a monthly supply of completely new soaps, blades and extra pre and post-shave products for you to try out such as oils, balms, colognes, alums and more. As a gift, this would have been amazing. I’m on a number of subscription based services to make it easier for me to manage my life when I’m working. There’s also the gifts such as The Gardeners World from Mrs P that I receive monthly. For me this is an essential. If I work out the cost of far inferior products or a wet shave when I have a hair cut, this is right up my street.
“I’ll always choose something that’s essential to me performing my best at work, with the right products, every time without making unnecessary trips to supermarket so I can be at home with my family for as long as possible.”
