Are you starting to feel like your career is going nowhere? If that’s the case, you need to take action and start looking for ways to push your career in new and interesting directions. Lots of people manage to do this and there’s no reason why you can’t too. By doing this, you’ll find things that keep you excited by your work and motivated to keep pushing yourself.

So how should you go about doing this? That’s what we’re going to find some answers to right now. Each of the ideas below will help you to breathe fresh life into your career and find meaning in it. So, read on now to find out more about the career steps you should take next.

Stretch Yourself and Don’t Get Complacent

One of the main reasons why people start to hate their jobs and their careers is because they stop stretching themselves and testing themselves in new ways. It becomes too easy and not at all challenging to do your job, and that’s when it starts to feel mechanical and detached. You might also start to feel complacent which is never healthy for your career. To avoid all that, you should embrace new opportunities to stretch yourself and test yourself in new situations. It might be scary or daunting at first, but it’ll pay off in the end.

Pursue Feedback

A lot of us avoid feedback because hearing what we’re doing wrong can be tough to take. No one wants to be criticised, but that’s not the right way to look at feedback. You can start doing more and achieving more if you know where your weaknesses lie and how you can improve on them. It might seem like a small or even boring thing, but these kinds of positive changes could be the difference between stagnating in your current position and impressing people enough to eventually win a promotion.

Learn to Say Yes to New Opportunities

When a new opportunity comes your way, it can be scary and difficult to accept. But if you say no to the opportunities that present themselves to you, you’ll just stay where you are and never really progress. That’s not the way it should be, so force yourself to say yes to opportunities more often and see where they take you. That might mean leaving your comfort zone more often, but you never know what life outside of your comfort zone might be like until you try it!

Chase What Excites You in Your Career

If there’s one aspect of your career that really excites and interests you, you shouldn’t hesitate to pursue it. Lots of people do jobs they hate each day but that’s not the way it should be. Instead, you should look to chase the work that excites you most because that’s what makes you motivated and want to get up in the morning. If there’s something you love, think about how you might pursue it via training or whatever it takes. It’ll certainly end your problems with boredom and complacency.

Develop Skills That Are Becoming Relevant in Your Field Right Now

If you’re aware that there are certain changes being driven by tech or other advances in your field, you should develop skills that are relevant to those changes. For example, you could learn about how you can use Alexa Skills for business because that’s something that’s making waves in marketing right now. But the same applies to whatever kind of business you run and whatever’s happening in that industry. Having the right skills will help you to move with the times and moving into new positions as job roles change.

Find a Mentor

If you’re not sure where your career is going and you don’t know which steps to take next, it might make sense to look for a mentor who’ll be able to guide you a little. This mentor will have the knowledge and experience that comes with working extensively in their field and you can be sure that their support and advice pays off for you long-term because they know what they’re talking about. If you’re experienced already, finding an apprentice to guide can also give you new meaning and purpose in your career.

Do More Networking

Networking is about getting your name and face out there so people know who you are and what you have to offer within your particular career niche. It might help you to connect with people who might be able to find you opportunities and roles going forward that help you to advance your career and take it to places that you might not have thought possible before.

Always be Open to New and Foreign Ideas

When you want to advance your career, you need to be open to things that are new and unusual to you. This can be tough because when you’re set in your ways, it’s easy to be resistant to new and foreign ideas that are unfamiliar to you. However, it doesn’t pay off to close down potential career avenues. You never know what you might learn about and discover when you’re open to new ideas.

Set Small and Regular Goals for Yourself

It might be the case that all you really need to have in place are some goals. These goals can take all kinds of forms. You might want to improve a certain skill or something like that. The goals that work best tend to be the ones that are small. You can then tick them off regularly and set new ones for yourself as you go. They’ll provide you with motivation and direction in your career and that’s never a bad thing.

Careers can stagnate and it makes sense to push it into new directions if you want to stay interested and motivated on a day to day basis. Going to work when you have no motivation is pretty tough, so keep things interesting by exploring the kinds of ideas and opportunities mentioned above.
