How to Maintain Your Eye Health While Working from Home During COVID-19

Since March 2020, the coronavirus pandemic has caused thousands of people from across the country to work from home. Whether you do so already, or you’ve been ordered to by your boss, keeping your mental and physical wellbeing in check can be difficult during these unsettling times.

If you run your own business, it’s likely that you will be using a laptop or computer to complete your work; however, digital eye strain can have negative consequences for your health, such as dry eyes, blurred vision and headaches. With that in mind, here are a few tips on how to maintain your eye health while working from home during COVID-19.

Get the Right Setup

If you’ve been ordered to work from home, one of the best things you can do to look after your eyesight is invest in the right equipment and setup. While you may want to stay in bed using your laptop, this isn’t the best condition for your eyes or back. It’s advised to have a table or desk with a big enough screen that will reduce the risk of you squinting. Make sure that your screen is positioned at eye level and play around with the contrast settings and brightness to keep your eye health in check.

Adhere to the 20-20-20 Rule

When working from home, it’s important that you stay productive and motivated with your workload. To achieve this, you should take regular breaks throughout the day, which will be a great opportunity to stretch your legs and rest your eyes. Being behind a computer screen for hours on end can be bad for your vision, so following the 20-20-20 rule is key, which is where you look away from the screen every 20 minutes for 20 seconds, and focus your eyes on something that is 20 feet away.

There have been numerous optical studies carried out which show that when looking at a screen, we tend to blink up to 70% less. When we do blink, however, our eyes do not completely close, which can cause your eyes to dry out. Throughout the working day, try to be more conscious of your blinking as you will notice a huge difference.

Keep Hydrated

Dry eyes can lead to eye inflammation, vision problems, and abrasion of the corneal surface, so it’s vital that you drink plenty of water throughout the working day. The last thing you want is to feel rundown, fatigued, and lightheaded, so getting into the habit of drinking water is important. If you struggle to drink the recommended daily amount of water, having a glass by your side as you work can serve as a constant reminder to keep hydrated

Get Your Eyes Checked

There are many people across the country who are at high risk should they contract the coronavirus, meaning they’re unable to go out. If you are having problems with your vision and can’t visit your local optician, you can check out companies like Optical Eye Care who are a mobile optician. The company provides a completely mobile home visiting optician service and has a blend of client service and clinical expertise to provide the best experience possible.

Your eyes are the most important organs of sense, and should your smell or taste stop working, your eyes are the organ that will protect you from danger. Keeping your eyes healthy is crucial, so following all the tips above can help.
