Four rounds in four countries and a Latics golf day: why I care about Wigan golf

Local golf matters to me. I play these courses and I care about them staying open and affordable. So when Wigan golf turns up in the news, I pay attention, even when the stories are small.

Two items caught my eye this year.

Four men, four rounds, four countries, 24 hours

Wigan Today ran a piece on Tue, 14 Apr 2026 headlined "Four men from Wigan, four rounds of golf, in four countries, in 24 hours for charity". You can read it here.

I will be honest. I only know what the headline tells me. Four blokes from Wigan. Four rounds. Four countries. One day. For charity.

That is mad. I struggle to get one round in on a Saturday without a negotiation about bedtime and bath duty. Four rounds across four borders in 24 hours is the kind of daft idea that gets floated in the clubhouse and then quietly dropped. These lads actually did it. Fair play.

It also says something about the town. Wigan golfers do not do things by halves. I would have liked to know which courses they played and where they started, but that is not in the headline, so I will not guess.

Latics Golf Day

Wigan Athletic FC published "Gallery | Latics Golf Day" on Wed, 14 Oct 2026. The gallery is here.

I like this more than I expected to. Football clubs putting on golf days is a good thing for local golf. It brings people onto a course who might not otherwise
