Haigh Woodland Park's outdoor ice rink is the Christmas plan I did not know I needed

An outdoor ice rink is coming to Haigh Woodland Park this Christmas. For a Wigan dad, it is exactly the low-effort family win December needs.

Haigh Woodland Park's outdoor ice rink is the Christmas plan I did not know I needed

Every year I do the same thing in early November. I sit down with a cup of tea, open a notes app, and start building a Christmas plan that looks like a project schedule. Two festive days out, one light trail, one panto, a visit to see family, a slot for the school nativity, and somewhere in there a Saturday that is supposed to be relaxing.

Then December arrives.

So this year I am trying something different. One anchor event, chosen early, close to home, and fun enough that nobody has to be talked into it. The news that Haigh Woodland Park is hosting a "magical outdoor ice rink" this Christmas has landed at exactly the right moment.

Why outdoor beats indoor for us

We have done the indoor rink thing before. Bright lights, booming music, a plastic penguin to hold on to, and a queue that eats an hour of your life. The kids enjoy it for fifteen minutes and then want a slush puppy.

Outdoor skating is a different experience. It is colder, less polished, and far more memorable. Rosy cheeks, breath in the air, a bit of drizzle that nobody minds because they are already wrapped up. My youngest will fall over at least four times and laugh about it every time. My stepdaughter will pretend she is not enjoying it and then ask to go round again.

That is the sort of afternoon that actually sticks. Not the expensive one with the booking fee and the photo package. The one where everyone comes home muddy, freezing and in a good mood.

Haigh is already our default

Every family has a place they fall back on when nobody can agree on a plan. For us, Haigh Woodland Park is that place. It is close, it works for a wide age range, and there is enough space that a trip does not feel like a military operation.

Adding an ice rink to that mix makes the decision for me. I do not have to sell it, book three different things, or drive an hour each way. We can turn up, skate, warm up, and be home before the afternoon traffic builds.

The dad logistics bit

A few things I have learned the hard way about outdoor skating with children.

Gloves are not optional. Neither is a second pair of socks for the walk back to the car. Book a slot rather than turning up and hoping, because these things sell out in the week before Christmas. Go earlier in the day if you have small children, since tired legs and cold hands are a bad combination. And keep the session short. An hour on the ice is plenty, and the memory is better if it ends while everyone still wants more.

Budget for the warm-up afterwards too. The hot chocolate is never the cheap part of the day, but it is the bit the kids talk about on the way home.

The point of the plan

I am not trying to build a perfect Christmas. I am trying to build one that survives contact with real life. One well-chosen afternoon out beats a packed calendar every single time, and an outdoor rink at a park we already love is about as straightforward as it gets.

Get it in the diary early, keep the rest of the month loose, and let this be the thing everyone remembers.
