Wigan's Fettlers Scheme Hits a Milestone with Hampton by Hilton, Now the Town Has to Turn Up
Fettlers has hit a major milestone with Hampton by Hilton. I'm rooting for it, but a regeneration scheme only works if the town actually turns up and uses it.

I have been keeping half an eye on the Fettlers regeneration scheme in Wigan for a while now, in the way you do with any big town centre project: hopeful, a bit sceptical, and quietly wanting it to come good. So the headline in Wigan Today this week caught my attention. According to their report, the scheme has hit a major milestone with Hampton by Hilton. That is a proper hotel brand attaching its name to a Wigan town centre project, and that is not nothing.
Why a hotel matters more than it sounds
It is easy to shrug at a hotel announcement. Most of us who live within driving distance of a town will never book a room in it. But a branded hotel is a signal. A chain like Hampton by Hilton does not put its name on a site because it is feeling generous. It does it because somebody has run the numbers and reckons people will come, stay the night, and spend money in the town while they are there.
For a place like Wigan, that is the kind of vote of confidence that has been in short supply for town centres up and down the country. I run a business, and I know how much weight a recognisable name carries when you are trying to get other people to commit. One anchor makes the next conversation easier.
The bit nobody puts on the press release
Here is my honest view, and it is the same view I have of every regeneration scheme I have watched over the years. The buildings are the easy part. Somebody draws them, somebody funds them, somebody builds them, and then there is a ribbon and a photo and everyone goes home.
What decides whether it works is what happens on a wet Tuesday in February three years later. Are families still choosing to go into town rather than the retail park? Are the units let? Is the hotel full of people who have come for a wedding, a match, a gig, a work trip? Or is it a nice looking shell that the town drives past?
That part is not down to the developers or the council. It is down to us. People who live nearby, people like me who are always looking for somewhere to take the kids for a day out, local businesses deciding where to put their staff up or hold a meeting. A regeneration scheme is a bit like a new golf course: it only stays open if people keep paying for a round.
What I will be doing
I am not going to pretend I have a vote on how Fettlers gets delivered. What I can do is the same thing I ask of readers whenever a decent independent opens near me. Go and have a look. Spend some money. Tell people if it is good, and be honest if it is not.
So I am rooting for this one. The Hampton by Hilton news is a real step, not a vague promise, and Wigan deserves a town centre that people choose rather than tolerate. But I will say it plainly, as a dad who has watched too many shiny schemes go quiet: it is great for the town, as long as people actually come and use it. That bit is on us.
If you want the detail on this milestone, the Wigan Today report is the place to read it. I will be following along and, with any luck, reviewing the end result in person once there is something to walk around.
