Half term in Wigan: local fun first, Manchester second

The MEN has 20+ Manchester half term ideas. Useful, yes. But as a Wigan dad, my first stop is local. Here's my honest take on planning the week.

Half term in Wigan: local fun first, Manchester second

I saw the Manchester Evening News roundup of more than 20 things to do around Manchester this October half term and Halloween. It is a genuinely useful list if you are planning a city day out. But my first reaction as a Wigan dad was: here we go again. Another half term guide that starts in Manchester and works outwards.

I love Manchester. I will happily take the kids there for a proper day out. But defaulting to the city every school holiday gets expensive and tiring. Parking, traffic, tired kids, the lot. And it quietly sidelines the stuff on our doorstep in Wigan.

The article is worth a read. You can find the Manchester Evening News roundup here. It does what it says on the tin: a big pile of Halloween and half term ideas around Manchester. Use it as a menu, not a mandate.

My approach is local first. Before I open a Manchester list, I check Wigan. The leisure centre, the library, the community centre, local clubs. I ask other parents. I look at what is actually running, not just what looks good on a roundup. Supporting local is not a slogan. It is where I spend my money and my Saturday mornings.

Staying on top of half term is hard. The week arrives and suddenly you need a plan. I pick one bigger day out, maybe Manchester if the list throws up a winner, and keep the rest close to home. Lower cost, less travel, more time actually doing something rather than sitting in the car.

If you are in Wigan, do not let a Manchester list make you feel behind. Use it. Then check your own patch. And if you find something good locally, tell other parents. That is how we make Wigan easier to navigate for everyone.
