Many businesses concentrate most on communicating externally; the worry about talking to customers, investors, clients, and the media. As a result of this, communicating effectively internally can be forgotten. Proper communication with your employees is essential. It allows you to manage work more effectively, have a better idea of morale, and help your team to feel valued.

1. Be clear and concise. Avoid over-explaining and using a lot of confusing technical jargon. This causes people to misunderstand what you’re saying. Keep your messages simple with clearly outlined expectations. 

2. Set the tone at the top. As a business leader, you will set the tone of communication. You should be both visible and accessible to your team. This suggests an understanding that there is a connection between communication between staff and achieving your company’s goals. 

3. Understand your team. You might have to talk to different audiences in a slightly different manner. Consider surveying your employees on a semi-regular basis so you can check if they are receiving the information that they need from you to work effectively. 

4. Use different channels. Many people need to see or hear a message a few different times, in different ways, to be able to understand it properly. Send out your messages electronically, via email, in meetings, or use SMS.  Make sure the message is consistent across all the channels that you use. 5. Notify employees before anyone else. When you’re sending out communications, speak to your own team first. Your staff should never be surprised by, or learn business news from, a report in the media. They need to hear your news from you first. 

6. Match actions with words. If you say you’re going to do something, do it. If you don’t, you can undermine your credibility and your staff will have less reason to trust you. They will be less likely to believe what you say or take messages from you seriously. 

7. Encourage face-to-face communication. Most people are tech-savvy today, but human interaction is still often the best way to go. Most employees prefer to hear news and information from their own supervisors. Train your managers on how to communicate properly and make sure you give them the right tools to do this. If managers are being asked to explain a complicated change, give them key talking points and resources to help them. 

8. Train often. It is essential for a company to offer its staff training on a regular basis. Training keeps everybody on the same page and helps your team to develop. 

9. Communicate regularly. create a calendar of tasks with regular dates for sending out communications to your teams, such as a regular company newsletter, emails, or a team meeting. 

10. Measure effectiveness.Set objectives for your communications and analyze whether you are meeting those goals. Ask your team if the company has communicated its strategy with them properly. Do they understand how their day-to-day activities help the organization to meet its targets?
