Employees are no doubt the backbone of our businesses. Whether you operate a small retail store or an online-focused business with remote workers, employees get a lot of work done and are vital to the success of your business. As a business owner or manager, it’s usually your responsibility to motivate your employees so that they can be their best at all times, but thinking of the right things to say and do can be difficult.

So to help you out, we’ve put together a couple of helpful tips to help you inspire your employees so that they can be more productive in the workplace.

Create a productive company culture that values communication

One of the biggest challenges of running a business with several employees is keeping communication channels open. You should be aiming to create a company culture that encourages people to talk to each other and speak up if they have a suggestion or can point out a flaw that could be fixed. You don’t want to silence people because they’re trying to contribute because it will make employees feel oppressed. By encouraging your staff to communicate, you give them a more important role in the workplace and they’ll feel like they are contributing more to your business.

A lack of communication just creates more problems. It’s difficult to get work done, your business will be less productive and your office will develop cliques instead of being a group that strives to work together in harmony.

Empower your team with up-to-date technology

If you want your team to be efficient and productive then you’ll need to empower them with the latest technologies to help them. Whether it’s state-of-the-art computers for in-house creative professionals, faster internet connections or updated laptops so that they can get work done on the go, there are plenty of reasons to upgrade their technology. Technology upgrades can also be good for enabling completely new work processes and productivity boosts. Remote working is a great example of this and it requires that you have the infrastructure to support employees working from outside the office and devices such as laptops or tablets that can be used to get work done.

If your team requests that you upgrade their hardware or tools, then consider it as an investment not only in your business but also their happiness and how content they are with your business. Not every investment is worthwhile, but when it comes to their productivity and well-being, there are some expenses that can easily be considered a must.

Utilize the strengths of your employees instead of focusing on their weaknesses

Every employee has their strengths and weaknesses. Some employees work better alone, others are more efficient in groups and some have inherent leadership qualities that help them guide other team members. With a talent management system in place, you can take note of these strengths and utilize them to create a strong and focused team of employees that focus more on their positives rather than trying to cope with their weaknesses.

Of course, that’s not to say that you should be ignorant to their weaknesses, but you should aim to capitalize on strengths rather than putting employees in a position where they need to make up for what others lack. Getting to know the strengths of your employees requires a lot of interaction and observation, but the investment in your employees is well worth your time as it will create a more focused and motivated team that excels at their individual strengths.

Stop with the micromanagement

One of the most frustrating things that you can do to your employees is micromanage their every move. This can be incredibly overbearing but it also shows a lack of faith in their ability to work efficiently and be productive. It’s perfectly understandable that you want to watch over certain employees to ensure they’re getting their work done, but eventually, you’ll want to try and reduce the amount of time you spend micromanage and trust that they’ll be able to make the right decisions and be productive in the workplace.

A balance of micromanagement and letting your employees approach problems on their own is necessary in order to truly create a positive workplace that can inspire your employees to be more productive in the workplace. It gives them more freedom to approach work-related problems with their own solutions and it allows them to feel like a bigger part of your business.
