They say that you never get a second chance at first impression and that is truer in the modern world than it has ever been. The modern world moves at such a speed and is so relentlessly competitive, especially when it comes to the professional sphere, that being able to make the right impression is invaluable. The first and most obvious thing that will impact many people’s first impression of you is always going to be the way that you dress. How you dress and present yourself often reflects a great deal about the kind of person you are and, in both professional and personal situations, can make a huge difference as to whether or not people are interested in connecting with you. With that in mind, here are some ways that you can start dressing for success.

Find your fit

One of the easiest mistakes that a lot of people make is that they assume that great clothes will always look great on them. However, that’s not the case. When it comes to your clothes, the truth is that it’s just as important how those clothes fit your body. If you don’t know your fit and you’re wearing clothes that are too big or too small they’re always going to look slightly off. We’ve all seen guys in suits that were slightly too big and made them look like kids playing dress-up.

Buy quality

If you buy low-quality clothing then that’s going to show in how it looks when you wear it. You need clothes that are high enough in quality to both last and present you in the most professional way possible. Of course, this doesn’t mean that you’re going to have to spend huge amounts of money. Things like Charles Tyrwhitt shirts are incredibly high quality but aren’t going to break the bank. It might seem like a small thing but investing in high-quality clothing is going to make a huge difference.

Take care of your clothes

Of course, it’s not going to matter how high the quality of your clothes is if you’re not able to actually look after them. Being able to take care of your clothes is absolutely essential if you want to be able to present yourself as a reliable professional that you are. This means that you need to keep them well iron/steamed/pressed and you can’t just shove them into your closet until the moment that you need them.

You might think that having to do this in order to get to where you want to go in your professional life is somewhat shallow. After all, shouldn’t your skills and the quality of the work that you do be the things that define you? And yes, that’s absolutely true but it’s also just not the world that we live in. While your achievements will always be the most important thing, you have to present yourself in such a way that people are prepared to engage with those achievements in the first place.
