As a National Recruitment Manager I get asked all the time; What do employers look for when they hire someone to fill a position in their business? This is an important question to consider whether you are on the job market or eager for a promotion. By understanding the desires of an employer, you can make sure that you fit the bill perfectly and guarantee that you are considered for the position. You might think that the desires of the employer change based on the position in question. However, this is not true and no matter what position you are applying for or industry you are working in, the desires of the employer remain the same. So, let’s look at some of the key factors that employers consider.
Dress The Part
You do need to make sure that you look like the person they’re searching for. Appearances do matter in the business world. Essentially, you need to appear professional and successful. Employers will judge you based on the clothes you wear and the accessories that you use. This is particularly true for high up positions in a company. Employers are eager to make sure that the workers in their company match the brand of the business. That’s why whenever you go to a job interview, you should make sure that you buy a custom made suit. You can purchase one from a professional tailor and don’t settle for the typical type of suits that other interviewees will be wearing. You also need to make sure that you are properly groomed and that your suit is well prepared. The last thing you want is for an employer to think you’re the type of person that doesn’t care about the little details.Connections
The next step is to make sure that you can connect to the interviewer on a personal level, not just professional. This shows that you will be ready for the challenges of customer and client service. Don’t forget that every job and position involves some level of customer service. There are very few positions where you will be able to avoid customer interaction completely. As such, this is always a key trait that employers will look for. Essentially, they need to find you likable.Potential
There is a question that you will be asked in virtually every interview whether it is for a managing position or an internship. Where do you see yourself two, three, four, or five years down the line? This is the chance for you to show that you have initiative and a drive to succeed. A lot of people trip up here and say something along the lines of ‘working to build this company and helping make it a success.’ First, this is too vague, and second, it doesn’t really show any aspirations. Instead, you need to talk about your ideas for the business you’re interviewing for as well as the next step beyond the position you are currently hoping to fill.If you take these factors into consideration when preparing for your interview, you will always be at the top of the list of any employer.
